Charity and giving back to society have always been central to the mission of the founding members of Guzo Kenya. The idea of forming an organization was born during a visit to Gathiga Children’s Home on 22nd December 2012. Over the next few months, plans to establish a group that would provide assistance to the less fortunate began to take shape.
On June 2nd, 2013, a proposal written by Diana Githu and Mary Mulwa was presented to friends and supporters, inviting them to join this mission. Though only 7 members attended the initial meeting, these pioneers became the driving force behind Guzo Kenya's development.
Transforming society through inspiration, empowerment, and propagating positive attitudes among the people we reach out to.
To nurture a culture of true voluntary-based community service for the holistic growth and development of society through initiating programs that benefit the less fortunate, leading to sustainable livelihoods.
Guzo Kenya began with a core group of members, primarily university students and young professionals, each committing KES 400 ($3) monthly to fund early projects focused on food donations and #MakingAChildSmile initiatives. This initial commitment, though significant for the members' circumstances, revealed a growing need for more substantial funding to support the institutions they served. This realization prompted the creation of "Friends of Guzo Kenya," a network of nearly 200 individuals—friends, family, colleagues, and other supporters—who share Guzo Kenya's vision and contribute financially.
Today, all funding for Guzo Kenya and its projects comes from this network of individual well-wishers. Crowdfunding is a collective responsibility shared by every Guzo Kenya member, ensuring the organization can continue to expand its reach and make a lasting impact on the communities it serves. This collaborative approach to fundraising allows Guzo Kenya to pursue increasingly ambitious projects and address the evolving needs of those they support.
For the past 10 years, Guzo Kenya and its members have dedicated the four days of Easter to making a meaningful impact through a series of charity events. Our mission is rooted in #ServingHumanity, and we strive to bring joy, support, and blessings to those in need.
- Good Friday: We provide essential support to our first-quarter beneficiaries, aligning with our annual themes, which focus on food security, education, and water, hygiene, and sanitation (WASH).
- Easter Saturday: We visit a prison, sharing chapatis, a cherished Kenyan delicacy, with inmates as a symbol of kindness and inclusivity.
- Easter Sunday: We honor our beginnings by returning to the first home where Guzo Kenya held its inaugural event, reaffirming our commitment to community service.
- Easter Monday: We extend our love and care to patients at the National Spinal Injury Hospital, delivering love packages to offer comfort and hope.
At Guzo Kenya, serving humanity is more than a mission—it is our way of life. Through these initiatives, we continue to create moments of happiness and inspire hope, ensuring that everyone we touch feels valued and blessed.
We've supported over 1,000 students in Turkana with daily school meals and stationery. Our efforts also include providing uniforms, IT labs for rehabilitated street children, and school supplies across Nairobi to ensure every child has the resources to succeed academically.
We’ve refurbished children's dormitories, installed rainwater harvesting systems for over 10 institutions, and provided sanitary towels to underprivileged girls. Our aim is to improve hygiene and living conditions, creating healthier communities.
Our food security initiatives include establishing sustainable vegetable irrigation systems, supporting biogas plants for energy, and donating food to over 50 institutions. We continue to support the Uji Feeding Program in Turkana, helping fight hunger while enhancing education through nutrition.
These milestones are a testament to our commitment to building sustainable solutions, improving lives, and creating lasting change in Kenyan communities. We remain dedicated to uplifting those in need, fostering empowerment, and making a positive impact for generations to come.
